It is best served as fresh fruit, and who will not enjoy the sip of that refreshing piña colada? We enjoy pineapples a lot and gives us the nutrients we needed, can cats eat pineapples like us? Pineapples are tropical fruits that are very popular during summers. Not only because it is juicy but also because of its refreshing taste. 

Did you know that pineapple cultivation is introduced in Europe during the 17th century? Back then, pineapple becomes a significant cultural icon of luxury. Pineapples around the world are the 3rd most important tropical fruit production. 

In addition to these trivia, pineapples’ dominant producers are Hawaii, by the year 2016 Costa Rica, Brazil and the Philippines were accounted nearly for one-third of the world’s production of pineapples. 

Lastly, pineapples are nutritious and give lots of benefits. Pineapples are filled with a good amount of potassium, carbohydrate, sugar, vitamin C, vitamin A, and a reasonable amount of calories. 

Can cats eat pineapple?

Absolutely yes! 

Are you delighted to hear the news? Most likely, you are now thinking of introducing this cultural icon of luxury to your loving cat. Funny it is, I remember that joke when a cat is being asked how was he treated like and he answered like the old days, like a god.

Anyways, however, pineapple shouldn’t be served in a large amount. Pineapple should be served moderately to our loving cats. When served in large amounts it may cause diarrhea. 

What are the benefits of feeding pineapple to your cat?

As we have discussed from our previous blogs, our feline friends are carnivores and they survive with meat. However, a treat of nutritious and luscious fruits may supply some health benefits to them. 

Pineapples as discussed earlier are rich in potassium, carbohydrates, sugar, vitamin A and calorie. Vitamin C though is naturally created by the cat’s immune system. Here are some benefits that our beloved feline may acquire from pineapples:

• It helps in protein and carbohydrate absorption.

• Adds up vitamin B6, copper, fiber and folate.

• May boost immunity

• Make your kitty a regular

• Help reduce the risk of cancer to your cat from its antioxidant. 

This serves that pineapples are not just delicious but also a nutritious disease for you and your cat.

How to serve pineapples to my cat?

Again, too much servings of pineapple may cause diarrhea to your cat. If you’re going to serve pineapple to your kitty, make sure you only do it moderately and not in a large amount. It’s painful to see out cat being sick after trying to make them healthy. 

Ways on serving your pineapples:

• Slice it into small cubes and serve it with a small amount to your cat. 

• Use pineapple as treats for your cats during training and plays. 

• Also add it to your cat’s dry food. 

Can cat eat canned pineapples?

Our beloved felines cannot digest canned pineapples as they contain a lot of sugar. Too much sugar on your cat’s diet may result in vomiting. In addition, canned pineapple may cause additional calories to your cat’s diet. Therefore, it is a bad idea to feed your beloved cat with canned pineapples. 

Are Pineapples Toxic to Cats?

If you have plants like pineapple in your yard, make sure that your cat will not stay near to it. Its leaves and body may cause allergies and wounds to your love cat.

Toxicity of pineapple to cats

As discussed earlier, pineapples are safe for our cats. However, too much of this may cause diarrhea to our beloved cat. Otherwise, there’s a toxic found in pineapples that may cause harm to your cats. 

Pineapples have the enzymes called actinidain. Fruits like pineapples. kiwi, mango, banana, and papaya contain these. Actinidain causes allergies to our lovely cats. This is part of the reason why we cannot give pineapples as part of their regular diet.

When introducing pineapple to our beloved cat, make sure not to give a large amount as it may cause diarrhea to our cat. As a responsible owner, we need to look for any signs of allergies in our cats after taking pineapple with their food. Otherwise, when allergies showed up, immediately bring your cat to the veterinarian and have it check. 

If you’re new and adding pineapple in your cat’s diet, you may stick with ¼ inch thick slices and never serve 1-2 pieces at a time. Do not serve canned or frozen pineapples to your cats. These foods are high in sugar that is indigestible and could cause vomiting to your beloved pet. 

If you’re gardening and have pineapple plants, take a look at your cat if it’s going to play around the pineapple garden. The leaves and body of pineapple may cause your cat’s body some allergies. The spikes may wound or injure your cat.
